Black Lives Matter 2020 and Computer Engineering Diversity

14 Jun 2020  Charles Choi

For the record: Black Lives Matter.

With events of late catalyzed by the needless killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and now Rayshard Brooks, I've been trying to think of ways to translate my anger and frustration into constructive action.

As an Asian-American educated in American public schools in the 1970's, an interminable cognitive dissonance I've had working in the Computer Engineering field is this:

Not enough of the kids I grew up with are the people I go to work with.

Much of this has to do with the history of race and class in the United States.

I want to work to correct this in the Computer Engineering field and urge all my colleagues to do the same.

We can not go back to status quo. For those that think otherwise, understand this: You are in the way.
